Chagall's Lovers with Bouquet Under the Trees

Get to Know Motel Kamzoil

This song opperates as our first true introduction to the Motel that Tzeitel probably sees. Instead of the nervous, tentative fellow of the first part of the play, we see him in joy. The song contains several references that show he's at least well educated (perhaps Tevye's disparaging reference to King Solomon isn't so far off!)

It also leaves no doubt that Motel is deeply in love with Tzeitel.

Some of the Biblical References

"God took a Daniel once again." Motel compares himself to Daniel, who was a prophet, famously was thrown into a Lion's den, and emerged unharmed.

The history of Jericho can be found here. Or if you prefer tangentially related music, here's Hugh Laurie singing Battle of Jericho.

"Out of a worthless lump of clay, god has made a man today," this line refers to the fact that Adam was formed from clay and given life by God.
